KEY LOCK BOXES

The Key Box system used by the Marysville Fire District is a program designed to expedite entry and eliminate property damage caused by the forcible entry required for evaluation of an emergency situation, and allows the Fire District to secure the building when leaving.

Both the Knox Box and the Supra Safe key boxes are highly secure, U.L. listed, nearly impenetrable steel vaults used for the storage of entry keys, for use by the Fire District. The fire department provides keys to access the key boxes within secure safes inside of the emergency response apparatus and those keys cannot be duplicated.

The Marysville Fire District has used the Supra Safe key boxes since 1985 and has moved towards utilization of the Knox Box system as of 2009. There has never been a box accessed illegally.

The authority to require use of the key boxes, within the City of Marysville, comes from City of Marysville ordinance NO.2532, which adopted the 2003 International Fire Code. Section 506 of the I.F.C. reads, "Where access to or within a structure or an area is restricted because of secured openings or where immediate access is necessary for life-saving or fire-fighting purposes, the fire code official is authorized to require a key box to be installed in an approved location. The key box shall be of an approved type and shall contain keys to gain necessary access as required by the fire code official".

The Marysville Fire Marshal requires that all buildings, which contain automatic fire alarm systems or fire suppression sprinkler systems, shall provide a box and the required keys for access to the building. An important reason for this is the real possibility of an alarm occurring when the business is locked and vacant. The availability of a key allows firefighters to safely enter the building, without causing any damage, evaluate the conditions present, and secure the premises.
